这是根据历史撰写的小说。内容情节环绕主角张力的坎坷、曲折经历而展开。张力本是印尼富家子弟，在时代动荡的巨浪冲击下，他逐渐变成愤怒青年。二战后，他到新加坡求学，因同情反殖民地主义斗争，被英政府下令离境。他到中国北大深造，时值中国政府鼓吹“百花齐放，大鸣大放”。他写了一些文章，大胆批评不合理现象，竟被划为反动右派，于是遂被驱逐出校门，自动离开中国。接着他转到台湾进入台大念书，又因言行引致当局不满，被指为“匪谍”，入牢囚禁，并与死神擦肩而过；当时台湾特工参与印尼苏岛的反苏加诺行动，遂向张力父亲勒索巨款，而后押送他到香港去。在香港他终于顺利完成大学教育。张力重回雅加达老家，联合好友同学，计划在雅加达创办民族语文学院，藉以推广华族文化。正当理想即将实现的时候，不料印尼发生政变，苏加诺下台，军人掌权，以反共为名展开血腥大屠杀，万千无辜的华人也惨遭殃及……
