Malaysian Crossings: Place and Language in the Worlding of Modern Chinese Literature explores how Chinese literature in Malaysia, known as 'Malaysian Chinese literature,' develops in marginalized contexts. Despite being considered peripheral in the global Chinese literary space, and with Malaysian literature often associated only with texts written in Mandarin or Malay, Malaysian Chinese writers continue to produce innovative and impactful works that gain recognition worldwide. The book discusses how these writers are aware of their marginal status but are motivated to pursue aesthetic innovation. It highlights historical connections between Malaysia and other Chinese-speaking regions and examines how Malaysian Chinese writers shape and enhance their creative environment within a connected literary space. Through case studies of authors like Lin Can-tian, Han Su-yin, Wang An-yi, and Li Yong-ping, the book analyzes their unique literary language styles and how their works depict the realities of a multilingual society, including reflections on Malaysia's colonial and post-independence periods. The author interprets various forms of transnational crossings by Malaysian Chinese writers from the 1930s to the 2000s, including their journeys, mindset shifts, and social interactions.
