這是一份真實的考察日記，記錄余秋雨在20世紀最後幾個月的數萬里行程。余秋雨與鳳凰電視台一行於1999年9月27日啟程，尋訪世界的古老文明。旅程開始時，5輛吉普車從香港海運至埃及亞歷山大港，人員乘坐飛機至希臘雅典，考察完希臘本土和克利特島後至開羅，與吉普車會合，然後由吉普車走完全程，直至返回香港。此次訪察的重點旨在探訪古文明，考察團決定選擇荒涼，因此沿途所至之處盡是衰落與荒涼，危險、政府管不到的蠻荒之地。旅程由希臘為起點，探訪雅典、邁錫尼等古城；其次來到埃及，憑弔金字塔和法老王；接著，往以色列、巴勒斯坦、約旦、伊拉克、伊朗等中東地區而去，這些神祕的國家，人民常年飽受戰爭摧殘；再來，去到人口爆炸的印度，一探菩提樹與洞窟；最後，抵達終點尼泊爾，從此地回到祖國：中國。
