1949是个影响许多华人的转捩点。那一年中共入村，村民斗资产阶级、斗地主，斗恶霸，为出一口忍耐多时的怨气而斗得不亦乐乎。有些人向往无产阶级的生活，有些人对于更换政权、喊口号感到迷惑，决定离家出走，一走就是几十年。泰麟就是在政权易手那年下南洋的。我身为移民第二代，对此转捩点充满迷思，最终花了好些年，踏上追溯1949的旅途，进行跟自己对话的心件工程。完成此程后，我告别1949，追逐生命的下一程，继续打造未来的人生。对我而言，断断续续做口述记录那十年，也是个自省的年代，不免同时勾勒起许多个人回忆，并参考对证口述事件的相关讯息。因此，书中出现的人与景都不纯粹是泰麟的个人经历，而是跨越年代的共同记忆。本书的内容是纪实，非虚构性的，西方称为non-fiction novel。我尝试突破传统“新闻写作”报告性质，融入个人的观察和体会，归纳出线条与脉络，梳理平凡人的一生。
