笔记小说不仅存在于《叻报》，也出现在《星报》（1890一1898）《槟城新报》（1895一1941）《天南新报》（1898一1905）但是数量不及《叻报》之多。到了1900年，《叻报》的笔记小说已经十分罕见，此后偶尔出现，如凤毛麟角，到了1907年，可以说是绝了迹，溯其原因，由于民智渐开，说教故事已经不适合潮流而新闻专业要求也日渐完善。必须指出，马华笔记小说中有一些不良思想，如歧视妇女，迷信鬼神，因果报应，愚孝盲从、不劳而获等，阅读时必须小心分辨。本书一共辑录了311篇，让读者能够欣赏马华旧文学中的笔记小说作品。新加坡历史极短，文字记载匮乏，华文方面有此篇章，如同荒漠之宝，这对于认识前人事迹，了解往事云烟，未尝不是一件有所裨益的事情！
