According to Santa Ana Pueblo legend, the animals' spirit leader created the sun, moon, and stars by using woven yucca mats and hot coals. He selected certain animals to climb from their homes in the Third World up to the Fourth World. The Squirrel, the Rabbit, and the Badger were allowed to go, but Coyote was forbidden because he was always causing trouble and stealing food. Coyote refused to stay in the Third World and followed the animals to the Fourth World. When discovered, Coyote was dealt with by the Leader as a lesson for animals and people who refuse to obey. Emmett "Shkeme" Garcia, a Santa Ana tribe member, shares this Pueblo story for young readers, with illustrations by Victoria Pringle.
