Sixteen-year-old Devon Mackintosh has always felt like an outsider at Keaton, the prestigious California boarding school perched above the Pacific. As long as she’s not fitting in, Devon figures she might as well apply to Stanford’s psych program. So, junior year, she becomes a peer counselor, supporting students in crisis. Her expectations change when Jason Hutchins, one of Keaton’s most popular students, commits suicide.

Devon supports Hutch’s friends but is haunted by her attachment to him. They shared an extraordinary night during their first week of freshman year, making her feel understood.
