Housing: Next

Housing is a concept that continuously adapts to societal, environmental, and technological changes. It involves accommodating people's daily lives, seasonal adjustments, family growth, and material endurance. Contemporary challenges such as shifting demographics, climate change, and inefficient use of resources are prompting the evolution of housing. This collection of essays examines how housing will change in response to these issues by exploring three key drivers: new ways of living, new mobilities, and new materialities. It discusses how new technologies related to mobility, construction, and building simulation can contribute to future housing that fosters sociability, connectivity, and a circular economy of ongoing material reuse. Drawing examples from high-density high-rise housing in Singapore and worldwide, it proposes strategies for designers and architects to lead the redesign of housing in the future.
