Jungle Janes

At a recent dinner party two bored Army wives challenged their host, Major Ken Hames, that anything he could train men to do, they could do just as well. He took up the challenge and devised an expedition for 12 middle-aged women: a month long trek through Primary Malaysian jungle. This book looks beyond the battles with scorpions, snakes, spiders, and giant hornets and goes further than the harrowing 12 hour treks to question whether the expedition was simply a battle of the sexes, or something far more interesting. Do people benefit from abandoning their daily comfort zones? Do humans grow and develop by going back to the basics of survival in an alien environment? What drives humans—even when contented—to search for self-knowledge? Is removing yourself from social conditioning the best way to grow? For the Janes, the journey was the means, but coming home was not the end.
