The African Caliphate: The Life, Works and Teaching of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio

This scholarly work focuses on the establishment in 1809, in what is today Northern Nigeria, of the celebrated Sokoto caliphate by Shehu (Sheikh) Usman Dan Fodio. It provides a biography of the Shehu and a comprehensive account of the history of his movement. The book also offers an in-depth examination of his teaching and literary works, highlighting how his writings were directly influenced by his circumstances and served to propel his movement. The Shehu's guidance was solely derived from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of his Messengerﷺ, which is reflected in his life and death at the same age. The teachings of the Shehu remain highly relevant today, offering insights into addressing many contemporary problems faced by Muslims worldwide.
