In 1970, one of Mississippi's more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. Ownership was assumed by a 23-year-old college dropout, Willie Traynor. The paper's fortunes changed after a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the Padgitt family. Traynor reported all the details, and his newspaper prospered.

Danny Padgitt was tried for the murder in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial ended with a guilty verdict and a life sentence, but Padgitt was paroled nine years later and returned to Ford County, reigniting tensions.
